Jacque Tara Washington
As a practicing psychiatric social worker, I believe the two most important elements are compassion and knowledge; the two go hand-in-hand. If I interact with clients intellectually, using all the various and diverse approaches, skills and techniques, but have little patience, respect or compassion for such clients, I would be lacking a key component of social work, as well as a vital humanistic connection.
Likewise, if I treat clients with dignity, but do not maintain knowledge regarding all the research on human development, it would be a disservice to the clients and the social work profession. I am proud to be a licensed social worker, to interact with human beings, and to connect with their minds and their spirits.
